The Hallé continues the celebration of its unique association with Elgar with the third ‘Elgar Edition’ CD. Heinrich Schiff, one of the world’s most distinguished and charismatic musicians, performs the hugely popular Cello Concerto.

Elgar considered his touching, witty tone poem Falstaff to be his best work. This wonderful score reveals every detail of Shakespeare’s great, bragging knight.

The beautiful Romance for Bassoon is a fond remembrance of Elgar’s days as a bassoonist. Full of wistful, lazy nostalgia, the Romance is an evocation of peace and quiet perfection.

The Smoking Cantata is a wonderful curiosity. While visiting a friend’s house, Elgar was asked not to smoke in the hall or on the staircase. Struck by the formality and specific nature of the request, he composed a 42 second cantata for baritone and orchestra echoing the exact same sentiment. A gem.
